In a manner worthy of God

As the Hutchens family prepares to leave for Malawi, use this year-end giving season to send them out again.

Two nights ago, Stacy and I were up in the middle of the night, waiting for a shipping pick up from the company we use to ship things by sea to Malawi. By about 1:00 AM, we had finished loading 8 totes and 3 cardboard boxes full of books, English Bibles, and personal items into the Penske truck.

We will beat the shipment to Malawi by about a month. With the holidays to keep us busy, our January 17 departure date is just around the corner.

We are all eager to get back home and to get to work. Nevertheless, I’m incredibly thankful for the numerous people I have met and been able to share the vision of Gospel Life with over the past several months.

When all is said and done, I will have visited 32 churches across the United States. These 32 churches worship in different styles, consist of different ethnicities, and contain people who come from vastly different economic circumstances, but are joined together in their commitment to God’s mission to gather his people through the preaching of the gospel.

This update is coming out on Giving Tuesday, the beginning of the year-end giving season. We don’t have a snazzy campaign for year-end giving. We only have our personal commitment to the Lord Jesus, his work, and those he has called to be “coworkers” with us (3 John 8).

We are going back to our labors in January, and we are thankful for everything and anything you can do to send us on our way “in a manner worthy of God” (3 John 6).

Ways to give

Any gift of any amount helps us with the numerous needs we have as we do ministry in Malawi, but if you want a concrete purpose for your giving, below are some ideas. As always, you can give online or by mail.

Recurring Donations
We set a goal for this furlough to raise an additional $5,000/month. We’ve been amazed at the commitments to long-term partnership that have been made. Currently, we have reached 44% of that goal. We’d still like to see $2,800/month raised before returning to Malawi.

You can become recurring partner by going to gospellife.org/give, checking the “Recurring Giving” box, and choosing the frequency of your gift.

Student Sponsorships
While our 22 students are home now for a holiday break, we still would like to have Shepherds Academy fully funded before they return. We still have 7 students needing sponsorship. Give $40/month or $480/year to our pastor training fund, and we will send you a profile of the student you sponsored.

One-Time Needs
If you’re looking for a need to give toward, here are some that we have right now. Just make a note of your designation in the memo section of our online giving or with your mailed check.

$10. Buy a Bible by giving to our books and Bibles fund. We provide high-quality, up-to-date Chichewa language Bibles for our partner churches.

$600. Help us put a roof on a church by giving to our church planting fund. When newly planted churches complete the walls of their church building, we help them with the cost of a metal roof, which protects their investment.

$1,600. We want to buy 8 plastic folding tables for the Shepherds Academy classroom, which are available at $200/table. Give to the pastor training fund and note “tables.”

$2,500. This is the cost of shipping those totes and boxes mentioned at the beginning of this update, along with an additional shipment we will send in January. Last month, we reported this need as $2,000 but costs have risen.

$8,000. Since beginning his work with the mission, our property manager and pastor of Gospel Life Baptist Church, Wilkes Watch, has seen his family grow to include a wife and two daughters, but in October, they welcomed a boy, Elijah, into the family. This family of five currently live in a one-bedroom house. This addition will add a second bedroom to the house as well as make other needed improvements.

$16,000. Gospel Life Baptist Church’s property sits in a high traffic area, which is great for ministry but bad for security. To mark out the boundaries of our property and make it difficult for thieves to freely enter and take building materials or church supplies, we want to build a border fence. This fence will be made up of brick pillars with metal bars between the pillars and large gates, which are common around gas stations, grocery stores, and other businesses in Malawi. This type of fence will increase our security while not reducing our visibility in the community, allowing people to still feel welcome to enter and worship.

Of course, there are many other projects that we have for the upcoming term. If you’d like to see our full list of projects, email me, and I would be glad to share them!
